Crunchy Snacks - Mullu Murukku: Guest Post by Vardhini
When I started blogging, my main temptation was to learn to bake and to discover new cuisines. And I felt so silly when I realised that I don't really need to go very far for that, since I have yet to learn so much about the myriad Indian cuisine itself.
If there's one word to describe the food landscape of India, probably its the rainbow. Yet even that's very inept since it limits the color and vibrancy of regional cuisines of India to just 7. And our culturally rich country is far more colorful and varied than that...Hopefully some day I would know many more colors and shades.
And in this quest to learn and to share, I have made some great friends in the blogging world. Incidentally many of them belong to the Southern coast of India, hence always intriguing me with their vast of preparations. Thanks to them, I'm little more aware now. And one such dear friend of mine is Vardhini from Zesty Palette, whom I've been interacted since almost the time we started bogging. She's not just a very passionate blogger (with consistent posts, great step-by-step pics) but also dedicated to healthy eating. But then I think to treat me and the readers with that occasional indulgence, she's sharing a popular and traditional south Indian snack.
I should say I am lucky to have found a lot of friends through blogging and some of us share a deeper bond. I got introduced to Anamika who blogs at TasteJunction when I was a newbie in the blogging world. What started as a casual email exchange grew much deeper and I am really happy to have found her and her amazing blog. Speaking about her blog, her pictures are gorgeous and present a virtual feast to the eyes. Oh and she not only cooks and takes pictures, she is a wonderful writer too. Checkout this page of hers, friends.
Mullu Murukku Recipe
(Crunchy deep fried savory snack from South India)
Ingredients:
Bengal gram flour (Kadala maavu/Besan) - 1 cup
Salt
Asafoetida - 1/4 tsp (Hing)
Chilly Powder - 2 tsp
Sesame Seed - 1 tbsp
Butter - 4 tbsp
Oil for deep frying
Take rice flour and bengal gram flour in a vessel.
Add chilly powder.
Add sesame seeds.
Load the murukku press with a single star shape disc and fill it with a portion of the dough. The murukku press is similar to a cookie press.
Heat a pan with oil. Make murukkus directly over the oil like I did or you could form a nice pattern on a plate and transfer to the oil.
