Celebrating photoshoot with baked custard

Life is fun when interesting things happen. When pre conceived notions and apprehensions are left behind, to enjoy the new. Last week I too crossed one such mental hurdle. Of being in front of the camera. 

Now like most of us, I too have lots of opinions (mostly negative) of the way I look, specially in pictures. My relationship with camera works better, when Im behind it. Though my friends and family have complimented me many times, on being photogenic or looking good in my pictures, yet I always gave credit to their faithful love for me, than anything else. So when I won this opportunity to be a model for "Mandy Toh's" portrait shoot, I amazed myself by taking it up! Yes life needs challenges.

 More than being a model, my fear lied in the make up department. You know being the simple 'kajal' and lipcolor girl with tied hair, the last time I did proper make up was for my wedding. Where I can easily say that I looked like loud reflection of myself...hardly an image that I'm proud of. So yes all these years I have been living in the notion that make up and me are not best friends. And again I was proved wrong.

Keeping all these apprehensions aside, I gave in to the way the photographer and the make up artist envisioned the look. So much so that I didn't even look in the mirror, till it was all done. For this assignment Mandy worked with Sanam, and she did a brilliant job of subtle yet dramatic make up, as desired by the photographer. Though in real I felt, a bit over-the-top, yet Mandy ensured me that the camera would love it!

Soon we got clicking. Initially I though maybe I should do broody, quiet looks. But Mandy wanted all natural, smiling look. Which was easy, being at home, my kids running around, I was completely at ease. The good part was to see the whole family (even my hubby, who was doing the babysitting for this) all excited. After the shoot, we all couldn't wait for the results.

And yes I'm so very happy with it. I'm sure it has changed all my pre conceived notions about being in front of the camera. Thanks Mandy and Sanam for my day of being a model :)

A sweet occasion needs a sweet dish. Pretty logical. Right? So here's one very straightforward and simple dish to bake whenever you want a quick sweet dish. This recipe is from Journey Kitchen and I have tried it twice. Thankfully this time I got few pics to share with you all. 

Baked Almond Custard

2 can evaporated milk

2 eggs 

5-6 tbsp sugar

1/2 tsp cardamom powder

2-3 drops of rose water 

1/4 cup of sliced almonds


1. Pre heat oven at 180 degree. Grease a baking dish, of medium depth. Not too deep, nor too shallow. For me this regular cake pan (shown in pic) worked. 

2. In a medium bowl, whisk the milk, eggs and sugar, till well mixed.

3. Add cardamom powder and rose water. Mix it again.

4. Pour in pan and bake for 15-18 mins.

5. Sprinkle the sliced almonds and bake for 5 -7 mins, till custard is set.

6. Remove from oven. And enjoy it cold, or at room temp.

Notes: I reduced the recipe and it was a decent for a family meal. I didn't add saffron, since I wanted cardamon to be the main flavour. But you can play around with your flavours. If not rose water, try orange blossom, replace cardamom with nutmeg or cinnamon or even plain vanilla.
